Yang Guang is one of contemporary China's most internationally influential mezzo-sopranos, renowned for her rich, profound voice, exquisite technique, and deep interpretative insight into operatic roles.
Her artistic journey began with rigorous training at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, followed by further studies at the Juilliard School in the United States, where she earned an Artist Diploma. This academic foundation not only solidified her classical technique but also broadened her artistic perspective. In 1997, while still in her twenties, Yang gained international recognition as the sole winner of the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. In 2001, she further distinguished herself by winning the prestigious Domingo International Vocal Competition—milestones that illuminated her path to the world stage.
After launching her career at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Yang has graced the stages of leading opera houses worldwide. From the role of Princess Amneris in Aida to Princess Eboli in Don Carlo, her portrayals reveal a profound understanding and compelling artistic expression of each character. Beyond opera, she has collaborated with major symphony orchestras around the globe, performing serious musical works by composers such as Mahler and Berlioz, demonstrating remarkable versatility and depth as an artist.
In recent years, Yang Guang has dedicated herself to educating a new generation of singers, teaching at conservatories in China and abroad. As both an artist and educator, she imparts not only vocal technique but also a deeper understanding of musical artistry. Through her unique cultural perspective and ongoing artistic practice, this distinguished mezzo-soprano continues to help write a global chapter for Chinese vocal music.
